When Aamir Khan took every possible measure to ensure that Imran Khan had a dream debut with Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, it was understandable as not only was Aamir the producer of the film, he is also Imran’s uncle. However, Aamir has extended the same mentorship to Prateik Babbar in the upcoming Dhobi Ghat. Aamir reportedly said that he took Prateik under his wings because he is a huge fan of Prateik’s late mother, Smita Patil’s work. Prateik, on the other hand, has described Aamir as his “father, brother, mentor and best friend”. Aamir knows that mentoring a promising talent can be quite a rewarding experience, and not just for the protégé.
Having a mentor is vital to ensure that you get the best opportunities and learn the nitty-gritty of your job. Says Aslam Shaikh, a media professional, “As a fresher you are bound to make mistakes, and very often, you don’t realise the magnitude of your error. When someone is patient with your mistakes and yet, is strict about making you achieve certain targets and aims, it’s reassuring.”
Not everyone is lucky to have a mentor however, and those who have felt the lack, make up for it by mentoring others themselves. Amitab Raina, a creative director with a production house, says this is especially important in industries where you need “pull” to get a foothold. “I never had a mentor, and it was very difficult to get where I am in this industry. I constantly mentor my juniors and I feel very happy when I see their progress. Some have even started their own businesses,” he says.
Funnyman Cyrus Sahukar however, says that everyone can now have a mentor — provided they don’t expect a human one! “The Internet is my mentor,” he says. “I ask it one question and it gives me back 1,000 answers.” On a more serious note, Cyrus says, “I have never had a mentor. Having a mentor is a privilege which only some people enjoy. I’ve learnt most of my work through trial and error. But even if you don’t have a mentor, you can turn to people you respect and admire and see how they approach situations.”
