Delhi lieutenant-governor Tejendra Khanna on Wednesday said that it is not acceptable that Mumbai is considered safer for women as compared to Delhi and urged the Delhi police to take all possible steps to change the image of the city. Delhi police commissioner, B.K. Gupta, while underlying the need for doing more for women’s safety, said that those cities are safer for women where people react if a woman is targeted before them.
Speaking to the media during the Delhi police’s 64th Raising Day parade, the L-G said: “Women in Delhi feel insecure in public places, which is not good for a capital as such, so Delhi police should take immediate steps in this regard.”
Commenting on the recent media reports on the law and order situation, Mr Khanna said, “Though Delhi police is effectively handling crime against women, still we read in newspapers that women feel safer in cities like Mumbai. The police should continuously strive to improve the situation and try to make the city more safe and secure.”
Mr Khanna also urged the police to be people-friendly. “Police personnel should have friendly relations with people so that they share information about suspicious activities. A friendly relationship will also encourage the residents to approach the police unhesitatingly.”
Meanwhile, the Delhi police commissioner, B.K. Gupta said that people should “react” if they witness incidents of eve-teasing or any crime happening anywhere.
“People should react if they witness eve-teasing, it is very important. If people are proactive, these incidents would definitely come down,” he said.
