‘Yamini will wear vintage pieces only’

It is the most awaited wedding of the season and Varun Gandhi is all set to tie the knot with fiancé Yamini Roy on March 6. While Yamini plans to go vintage and will wear only heritage pieces, Maneka Gandhi will be seen in a restored sari that Jawaharlal Nehru had woven in 1940, for the wedding while for the reception designer Madhu Jain has picked up an Upada sari for her.

Madhu has been designing for Maneka Gandhi for the last two years and says that though Maneka is not very much into clothes, what she wears has to be natural, subtle and elegant. She says, “She doesn’t like bling and over-the-top stuff. For Varun’s wedding, I have restored an old sari for her. The sari is a simple khadi piece in rose pink. It is the same sari that she wore for her wedding. And for the blouse I have used a fabric with woven pin-tucks, which makes it a very unusual weave.”
Whereas for the reception sari, Madhu uses Upada, the flat-weaving technique from the West Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh. “Upada is the lightest hand-woven work and the sari will have pure gold zari running through it. It will have a tribal bull motif and Maneka is teaming it up with an antique neck piece that she picked from her collection,” she adds.
She further says that since Maneka has a fair complexion, she had the advantage of playing with bright colours for her other clothes.
Was she given any specifications before she took up the job? Not exactly, says Madhu. “Maneka and I are on the same wavelength. My own look is understated, so we both connect well. When she feels safe in your hands, she leaves it on you as she completely trusts you. So it has not been difficult,” she says.
