The Budget session of Parliament could be concluded any time in the first week of April. This was indicated by the official sources after the announcement of the poll schedule for five state assemblies on Tuesday evening.
Though the Opposition leaders are suggesting that the session should be concluded in March instead of April 21 as polling for the Assam Assembly has been scheduled for April 2 and 11 respectively, the government is expected to discuss the issue of curtailing the session with the floor leaders of non-UPA parties and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Ms Sushma Swaraj.
The Cabinet committee on parliamentary affairs would take a final decision in this regard, they said.
The Congress and its allies in the UPA, the DMK and the Trinamul Congress, will be busy for the crucial electoral battle in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal from Wednesday. While the Left, AIADMK are gearing up for a “do or die” battle in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
The main Opposition BJP, which has no major stakes in these states besides the Union Territory of Puducherry, is optimistic of some seats in Assam and create some space in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
But the political parties in the Hindi heart land have no role to play in these states.
A top BJP leader said that the political scene in Assam would change after the Assembly election, hinting that pre poll allies of different parties could switch over to other parties.
The Budget session began on February 21 and is to concluded on April 21, as per the schedule before the announcement of the poll programme by the Election Commission. During this period, the two Houses will adjourn for recess on March 16 to reassemble on April 4 to enable the department-related parliamentary standing committees to examine the demands for grants relating to various ministries.
