In a novel initiative, the newly-formed Tirupur Industrial Protection Committee has decided to field 1,000 candidates in a single constituency during the Assembly elections.
R. Annadurai, vice-president of the Hindu Munnani, Tirupur district, who is also the coordinator of the committee, told this newspaper that the main intention behind fielding 1,000 candidates in Tirupur-North is to draw the attention of both the Centre and the state in seeking a permanent solution to the issues concerning the textile industry.
After a series of meetings with small and medium-evel hosiery unit owners, whose livelihoods are at stake following closure of 729 dyeing and bleaching units, it was resolved to highlight the issue during the elections with such a unique exercise.
He said the committee comprises 18 members, who were industrial unit owners in and around Tirupur, without any political leanings. All of them want the vexatious dyeing issue resolved. “Since Assembly elections have came in handy for us, we have decided to cash in on the opportunity as none of the political parties take any interest in solving the dyeing issue which hampers the lifeline of the knitwear capital,” he said.

NC Hills scam accused files nomination

March 18: In what has surprised many political observers, the prime accused of `1,000 crore North Cachar Hill Scam, Mohet Hojai, who is languishing in central jail of Guwahati, filed his nomination from Halflong.
The Autonomous State Demand Committee, which nominated Hojai, filed the nomination papers on his behalf.
He has been in judicial custody since his arrest in 2009 by National Investigation Agency, which investigated the case to report as to how crores of rupees meant for development was flowing to the coffers of separatists group in Assam.
Soon after Hojai’s nomination was filed, the AGP decided to severe its tie with ASDC.
