The growth of population in the frontier state of Assam has declined but higher growth rate of population in bordering districts remains an area of concern.
Disclosing that population of Assam has grown to 3.11 crores, R.K. Das, the director of Census operation Assam, told reporters that state has registered an average growth rate of 16.93 per cent which not only less than 2001 Census but also below the national growth rate of population 17.64 per cent.
Refusing to comment on higher growth rate of frontier districts adjoining the international border with Bangladesh like Dhubri 24.40 per cent and Goalpara 22.74 per cent, Mr Das said that lowest growth of population was recorded in western Assam’s Kokrajhar district, headquarters of Bodoland Territorial Council. Though, districts like Dhubri and Goalpara adjoining the international border with Bangladesh have registered higher growth of population, it has come down significantly from 1971 Census when it had recorded an abnormal growth of 61.96 per cent.
He also pointed out that sex ratio in the state has shown an improvement from 935 in 2001 to 954 in 2011. He said that 14 out of 27 districts of the state registered higher sex ratio during 2011 while 13 districts had sex ratio lower than the state average of 954.
