For the first time, the Election Commission of India will brandish the magic wand to sensitise all the ‘Muggles’ out there who don’t understand the charm of polls.
For this venture, it roped in Kerala’s own ‘Dumbledore,’ Gopinath Muthukad who has trained many a little Harry Potter in his Magic Academy.
A magic show titled ‘We the People’ that encourages the voters to exercise their franchise will be held a Tagore Theatre in the capital city on April 6.
The Chief Electoral Officer Nalini Netto, said the show was being held as part of the EC’s efforts to educate voters and enhance their participation level in elections.
“Though EC is organising a number of programmes such as street plays in all states, it is the first time that a magic show is being held,”said an election official.
The script for the 30 minute show was vetted by the EC almost a month ago.
It would throw light on the socio-political conditions prevalent in the pre-independent era where political freedom remained a distant dream.
“In the show, a magician appears before the suffering public and educates them on the virtues of a democratic government and encourages them to vote,” said an official.
Film actor Suresh Krishna appears as the autocrat ruler while Muthukad is the magician. Artistes from the Magic Academy would also take part in the show.
It may be noted that while the national average of voting percentage has been 55, in Kerala the average has always been above 70.
Perhaps Muthukad’s ‘abracadabra’ will take it further up.
