Not many know that top playback singer Sonu Nigam used to be a school- topper too. “Even though I studied only till the 12th standard, I was always a topper. My notes used to be famously known as ‘Nigam ke notes’. Eventually, I had to give up studies for singing. But then, you don’t need a degree to become a singer,” he says.
Remembering his days of struggle, Sonu says, “Whenever I used to pass by Lakshmikant-Pyarelal’s house, I prayed for a chance to work with them. Singers, those days, had a literally hand-to-mouth existence. But the best phase in my life began after I got to sing in Border and Pardes.”
