The Election Commission and the income-tax department have seized a total of `54.17 crores “unaccounted money” so far in the run-up to the elections in Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission said on Wednesday.
While the Election Commission’s flying squad seized a total of `29.87 crores, its surveillance team recovered another `9.24 crores. The I-T department, which is working closely with the Election Commission, also seized `15.06 crores, Election Commission’s deputy election commissioner J.P. Prakash told reporters.
“It is only the beginning of the efforts that the Commission is making. It may not be the end,” he said, adding that 521 FIRs have been registered in the state and they will be taken to their logical conclusion.
Asked whether the distribution of cash was unique to Tamil Nadu, Mr Prakash said, “It is a menace everywhere”.
A total of `64.82 lakhs in cash were recovered in Kerala, he added.
