More than ten percent of the children wearing eye glasses do not require them. A study conducted by Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, that more than ten per cent children are recommended eye glasses by ophthalmologists due to faulty eye check up.
The centre conducted a study on over 18,000 children by a group of 102 experts across the country. In the study, some startling facts came to light which indicated that some shopkeepers who did the check up with the help of computer did not conduct the procedure properly.
However, it cannot be denied that children do suffer from eye diseases which may occur due to long exposure to television, computers and video games.
The condition in which children face problem in reading, have a blurred vision and have frequent headaches is known as retinopathy of the premature. This is confused with weak eyesight.
Medical Superintendent of Dr R.P. Centre, Dr Shakti Kumar Gupta said that the parents should consult the doctors rather than visiting an optician for power glasses directly as wearing glasses when one does not require them can be harmful for the vision and overall mental health.
During an eye check up, eye drops should be administered every 15 minutes so that the pupils dilate and then only the check up can be done to know the exact status of the eyes.
