The Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing the alleged irregularities in awarding contracts related to the Commonwealth Games, has served notice to the former chairman of the Organising Committee (OC), Suresh Kalmadi. He has been summoned under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) for alleged violations of foreign exchange rules.
According to sources, Mr Kalmadi has been asked to appear before the agency on April 26 for questioning. The ED is probing alleged FEMA violation in the Queens Baton Relay (QBR) held in London in 2009. The agency wants to ascertain the role of Mr Kalmadi in financial dealings and other decisions related to fund transfers for the QBR.
“The probe agency has asked Kalmadi to produce before it details related to his bank account, foreign exchange transactions, his movable and immovable assets and foreign trips undertaken by him in the last few years,” sources said.
The ED has also registered two cases related to Time, Scoring and Result (TSR) system (contract worth `108 crores) and overlays (`630 crores) under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). Sources said certain OC officials and private contractors will also be booked under the stringent PMLA.
Sources further said, “The ED will also register three more cases, related to CWG contracts, under PMLA very soon”.
