Giving interim relief to 200-odd autorickshaw drivers in the city, the Delhi high court on Tuesday stayed the city government’s notification demanding `15,000 from them for installation of global positioning system (GPS) in their vehicles.
Justice Indermeet Kaur, in an interim order, stayed till May 27 the government’s decision to charge `15,000 from auto drivers for installation of GPS.
The court stayed the notification after hearing a batch of petitions filed by 200 auto drivers through their counsel Praveen Aggarwal, alleging that the government’s decision violates their fundamental right to earn their livelihood.
The auto drivers had moved the court, challenging the part of Delhi government notification, demanding `15,000 for GPS installation.
The court also made it clear that the order would be applicable only to the auto drivers who approached the court.
“We get the same product elsewhere for `3,000-`5,000. But the government is forcing us to buy the expensive model,” Mr Aggarwal said and asked the court to quash the clause which demands the amount from them.
The court fixed May 27 as the next date of hearing in the matter.
