Discerning citizens and civil society organisations that have remained in the forefront defending the interests of the Bhopal gas victims on Wednesday reacted sharply to the Supreme Court decision dismissing the CBI’s curative petition against an earlier judgment of the apex court that diluted the charges against the accused in the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster case.
Reacting to the apex court order, Abdul Jabbar, convenor Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan (BGPMUS) said: “We have landed here because every action of the CBI is only geared to please the government in power and in the Bhopal gas disaster case, at each and every stage, it has been observed that the government has been trying to protect the interests of the multinational US company.”
Mr Jabbar described the dismissal of the curative petition filed by the CBI and the Madhya Pradesh government as denial of justice. He said it is a case linked with the death of 35,000 citizens in the poisonous gas leak from the Union Carbide pesticide plant.
Trying to interpret the latest top court order, he said: does it mean people will have to suffer because there has been a delay on the part of the government and the CBI to go in appeal against an earlier Supreme Court order.
