[1]Imagine a collection that declares with a hint of defiance, “I am all Cut Up with You.” Fashion designer Kiran Uttam Ghosh’s latest creations reflect a rebellious streak, yet it is wrapped in subtle femininity. “It is the business of fashion to make the wearer conform, but that’s an old-fashioned concept. Deform is the new black. And unzipping, breaking, cutting — distortion is the new deal. That indeed is the essence of my collection,” underlines the designer.
Kiran applies her designer skills right at the basic level, starting with the fabric, which is meticulously heat pressed into pleats, then the scissors do the job of cutting it into different shapes and sizes.
Talking about the line, she says, “It seems to acquire a mind of its own. Call it the global angarkha or a wraparound that can be worn simply as a dress, or for the more demure women to be paired with leggings. To describe it in a single statement: It is the improvisation of the Indian angarkha by simply cutting and wrapping it.”
Your “recently out of recession effect” purse-strings can relax too. “Quite ideal to carry on vacations, it’s light, bright, global and doesn’t need ironing,” she emphasises.
The designer has a finesse for details and a panache for creating the minimal understated yet arresting look. The line has acid neon shades of canary yellow, orange, lime and pink juxtaposed with torquoise blues, indigo and teal, with metallics like gold, bronze and silver.
The embellishments tell an interesting story. “The edges have zips instead of the much used gotas, some of them flaunt a single flower. And if you are ready for some unlikely adventure, then brace yourself for a fine display of nuts and bolts (straight from the mechanic’s garage) merrily hanging over the shoulders as embellishments, but the demure ones can be content with tassels in gold colour. The bling factor exists but in a restraint form,” points out Kiran.
