The CBI special court at Chandigarh issued fresh summons to former Punjab and Haryana high court judge, Justice Nirmal Yadav, who has been charged along with four others in a sensational, 2008 bribery scandal widely known as the “cash-at-judge’s-door” scam.
Special judge Ritu Tagore, whose earlier summons directing Justice Yadav to appear in court on April 30 could not be served on the judge at her Gurgaon home, has now asked her to be present at the hearing scheduled for July 9.
The charges against Justice Yadav pertain to August 2008, when the then Haryana additional advocate-general, Sanjiv Bansal’s clerk Prakash Ram delivered a packet containing `15 lakhs cash to the Chandigarh residence of Punjab and Haryana high court Judge Nirmaljit Kaur, who immediately reported the matter to the police.
Initial probe suggested the cash was allegedly meant for Justice Nirmal Yadav and was wrongly delivered by the clerk who got confused over the judges’ similar sounding names.
Interrogation of suspects followed up by investigations in neighboring Himachal Pradesh also indicated that the cash might have been intended to finance the purchase of land in Solan district.
