Students rushed to their favourite Delhi University colleges across the capital to fulfil the admission formalities on Thursday as many of the total number of seats in select courses at the high-profile colleges were exhausted on the first day.
DU officials meanwhile assured students that reasonable cut off percentages are likely by the third list and that the high cut-offs were limited to just a few courses.
“Out of 252 seats for the B.Com. (honours) course, 237 were filled today and out of 62 seats in economic (honours), 51 were filled,” said SRCC principal Dr P.C. Jain.
He said the cut-offs had been quite reasonable and were not inflated at all.
Long queues of students were seen at Miranda House and the prospectuses fell short than the demand.
More than 400 of the over 900 total seats were filled on the first day, with some courses booked over their capacity in the general category.
College officials said economics, political science and mathematics courses were filled above capacity, while few seats remained in the chemistry and physics courses in the general category.
At least five students are vying for every single seat at St. Stephen’s. For over 420 seats at the undergraduate level, the elite college has released a list of over 2,000 applications who have been selected for interview.
The college received over 21,000 application this year. The cut off witnessed an increase from 0.5 per cent to 5 per cent. The maximum cut off was 97.50 per cent for economics honours. The interviews will begin from June 20.
Students and parents were seen rushing to fulfil the admission formalities with some facing problems.
“The Hansraj College wants fee in draft while many colleges are taking cash too. There was a serpentine queue outside the bank. By the time my draft was ready, the teachers in the college were almost wrapping up. They asked me to come on Friday,” Anshika Singh, a student said.
Some students from Haryana were seen shuttling with their provisional marksheets.
“I went to Kirorimal with the provisional certificate issued by principal but the college is not accepting it. Many other colleges are accepting. The Dean, Students’ Welfare, had told us on open day that those who do not have marksheets may show their provisional certificates,” said Vineeta Singh, a student from Rohtak, who had come with her parents.
No information about grievance redressal committee was on display. The students wanting to register their complaint had to go to the Dean, Students’ Welfare, with their problem and were assured that their problem will be looked into.
On the first day, Hansraj College admitted 133 students with a total of 1,140 seats at the undergraduate level.
The Hindu College admitted 205 candidates while Kirorimal College admitted 280 students.
Both the colleges have a total of 744 and 700 seats, respectively, at the undergraduate level.
Heavy police force was deployed in and around the North and South Campuses and other off campuses colleges. Women personnel in civvies were also deployed.
