The man who won accolades for helming thought-provoking films as Iqbal and Dor is changing tracks. The director who had once proclaimed that he would never make a love story has done just that with his latest film, Mod. So is Nagesh too pandering to market forces?
“Yes, I was wrong in saying that I would never do a love story,” Nagesh admits candidly. But he asserts that Mod is not just a venture made with a fixed on commercial returns but a from-the-heart film. “I cannot control the success or failure of my film. I always attempt to challenge myself. I did Aashayein, which was a very personal film, but didn’t work. As a director I keep taking chances. Mod is my first love story. It’s very close to me. While writing it, I found this is it what I really want to do. This film has been my most enjoyable film,” he asserts.
Though Prakash Jha recently stated that it is vital to have saleable names in a film, Nagesh disagrees. “It is good business sense but stars carry a lot of baggage and more often then not, they overpower the roles written for them,” says the director who has roped in his Dor favourite Ayesha Takia for Mod.
