Petition challenges use of word 'Sindh' in National Anthem

Ahead of the 64th anniversary of the Independence Day of India, a retired professor has approached the Bombay High Court challenging the use of the word 'Sindh' in the National Anthem 'Jana Gana Mana' and has sought to replace it with the word 'Sindhu'.

According to the petitioner, Shreekanth Malushte, the word 'Sindh' in the anthem was replaced by the word 'Sindhu' in January 1950 by the government.

"However, the national anthem continues to be sung and broadcast in a wrong manner by using incorrect words," the petition states.

It further mentions that 'Sindh' is a part of the province in Pakistan, while 'Sindhu' river remained in India.

"The national anthem is sung in two difference versions in this country. While some use the correct word 'Sindhu', several others continue singing with the wrong word," Malushte said.

The petition seeks directions to be issued to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Culture to clarify and use the correct word.

The petition is likely to come up for hearing on September 15.
