Dear diary — for many the words bring back memories of carefully jotted down highlights of the day. It would be a treasure trove of secrets for siblings to unearth or a silent listener during times when no one else was around. It would sit there under the pillow, in the cupboard or on the shelf faithfully safeguarding all the secrets of its owner until he or she returned to make a new entry or share a new story.
Given that we live in an era where diaries have been replaced with I pads, and play books, the concept of maintaining a diary has also undergone a paradigm shift. Blogs are your new online dairies; except with a twist. Writing a blog can be a very fulfilling experience and has multiple advantages.
wIt makes you a good writer: “If you have a blog and update it a regularly, it keeps your creative instincts in place,” says blogger Kirit Kulkarni, 19. You could write about a daily activity, an important issue or something creative.
wEncourages discussions and debates: Since it is on the Internet for everybody to see, you can initiate a healthy debate among friends and garner opinions on various issues.
wNo maintenance: One doesn’t have to physically maintain a blog. Says Ashwini Hariharan, a pharmacy student, “There is no fear of loosing it or misplacing it since you don’t physically carry it around. Just hop on to it when you find Internet access.”
wIt a kick! “Knowing that you have a reader base is quite a kick! It’s also fun to know what your friends think about topics that you consider important,” opines Lumena Dhawal, 18, who loves to blog about current issues.
wNo publication cost: Your writing is there for the world to see without having to sell your idea to a publisher.
