[1]Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa lashed out at Sri Lankan defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa saying he had become “emboldened” because the Centre remained 'silent' over the Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution seeking economic sanctions against the island nation on the Tamils’ issue.
Asserting that the state government would not rest till Tamils in Lanka were given equal rights on par with the Sinhalese and led a life with dignity, Ms Jayalalithaa urged the Centre to convey its condemnation of Rajapaksa’s remarks through an envoy.
She was replying to a special call attention motion moved by Opposition parties in the Assembly on Thursday. Ms Jayalalithaa said Gotabaya’s remarks were like the “devil quoting the scriptures”.
“Fears are being expressed that Centre’s inaction on the resolution had emboldened Rajapaksa to make such statements in an interview. The Centre should strongly condemn Gotabaya Rajapaksa throu-gh the Indian envoy,” Ms Jayalalithaa emphasised.
The chief minister also said the resolution was passed in the Assembly based on a UN committee which found alleged excesses, including violation on no fire zone.
