The government is preparing to take punitive action against nearly 200 IAS officers who have not declared their assets by June 2011.
All ministeries and departments in the Central government have been asked to call for explanation from such officers who have not submitted their immovable property returns for the year 2010 so far.
A DoPT official said that if the defaulters are not forthcoming, punitive action will be taken like denial of vigilance clearance and non empanelment.
As the government prepares to crack down on defaulters, an official said this would be the first time that some officers are going to face tough action.
DoPT sources said presently 208 IAS officers are yet to declare information regarding assets, I-T returns and assets of dependants.
IAS officials, as per their service rules, are required to submit their Immovable Property returns (IPRs) in January every year.
“Vigilance clearances have so far only been denied in cases where a chargesheet has been filed against an IAS officer.”
