Indian physio Balbir kept Schumi super fit

An Indian played an instrumental role in Michael Schumacher’s illustrious career.

Punjab-born physiotherapist Balbir Singh spent almost a decade working closely with the F1 star, who has been considered the fittest driver in the history of the sport. The Indian-origin physio who currently holds a German citizenship had no previous F1 experience when Schumacher hired him ahead of his debut with Ferrari in 1996.

“I was working as a physiotherapist in a sports clinic in Germany and Michael came there for a treatment with his uncle. He liked my approach and a month later I received a surprise call from him asking if I wanted to be his fulltime physio,” Balbir recalled.

Over the years, Schumacher and Balbir became so close that they even shared accommodation at Ferrari’s Fiorano test track. Balbir said their strong personal relationship helped achieve success.

“It’s very important to have mutual trust and respect. I never tried and made him open up about his personal life, but I created an environment where he could unwind and talk if he wanted to. That’s what made us closer and we are still good friends. He is a wonderful person and a great dad to his kids,” Balbir added.

Balbir, who is currently working with Hispania racer Vitantonio Luizzi, said Schumacher showed great commitment during training sessions.

“He always wanted to go that extra mile. His fitness routine was three to four hours a day and six days a week. Michael especially enjoyed the yoga sessions. His work eithcs made him the fittest F1 driver of all time. I think, he is now extraordinary for a 42-year-old. I am glad that he is in F1 again and I am sure he will end his podium drought soon,” Balbir said.
