Sherin knocks at the doors of national team

Sherin Bhuvath’s dedication to cycle polo was never questionable. For him the thrill of playing the fast-paced game has always compensated for the lack of attention the sport gets.

And now, Sherin has been rewarded for his hard-work by being selected for the Indian camp of Cycle Polo for Asian Championship, to be held at Jodhpur, Rajasthan, from September 19 to 25. This is the first time, the 23-year-old, son of former state captain M. Bhuvath, has received the call for the Indian camp.

Sherin has led the State team and has also won the State Cycle Polo Championship as a player of the Thiruvananthapuram team.

“From my childhood, cycle polo has been a passion. It was my father who introduced me to the game. Under his training, I started to take part in the Championships since 2002,” he said.
Sherin, who is now in the Indian camp in Jodhpur, completed his graduation from the Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram.

“The training will begin on Monday. It will be a golden opportunity for me to play for the country, if I get selected. I will try my level best for it,” he said.

“Though, I like other cycling events, I am looking to be a succesful professional in the cycle polo,” Sherin says.

The defensive player added: “The game is lively and interesting. When we play district and state championships, people, including children flock to the ground to watch the game. Everyone is curious about the game. Most of them come to us enquiring about the rules and techniques of the sport.”

Sherin also claims that the popularity of the game is on a rise in the country, especially in Kerala. “I can confidently say that there is considerable increase in the number of players registering their names under various associations. The next five years will witness a remarkable change in the popularity of the game,” he says.

“Without the guidance of my coaches, I would have never received the call for the camp,” he said.
