Delhi lieutenant-governor Tejendra Khanna asserted that Delhi is equipped to tackle any terror threat. He stressed the need for the police to be alert on ground to combat terrorism.
Mr Khanna stressed the need to “strengthen human intelligence on ground to combat terrorism and crime”.
“We need to set a benchmark for the rest of the country and for that people will have to provide vital information to the police,’’ Mr Khanna said while addressing the passing out parade of the recruits. Security, law and order is imperative, he said speaking at Delhi police training college at Jharoda Kalan. He urged the Delhi police and public to be alert so that any untoward incident may be averted. He also said that the Delhi police needs to check the speed of the vehicles on the roads and take strict action against errants as 1,800 people die in road accidents annually. He underlined the need to help women feel safe in both rural and urban areas.
“Terrorism is the biggest issue the country is facing today,” Delhi police commissioner B.K. Gupta said. “We need to increase our local intelligence capabilities,’’ he said.
Out of 685 personnel selected for commando training, who will head to the CRPF training centre in Nanded, Maharashtra, 25 are women, Mr Gupta informed. Four days after a 2,022-strong batch joined the force, the Delhi police on Wednesday inducted 4,568 constables, including 460 women, for a total force strength of over 83,700, authorities said. All the constables being inducted have undergone preliminary commando training. They were given training in unarmed combat , counter-terrorism and cyber crime. For the first time, the women constables would also be given specialised training in unarmed combat, motorcycle-riding, adventure training and rescue operations.
The Delhi police had last year Aug 31 inducted 5,697 new constables, including 351 women.
