After Bolt, Fraser to skip CWG
Jamaican sprinter and men’s Olympic champion Usain Bolt has already decided to give this year’s Commonwealth Games a miss and now women’s Olympic gold medallist Shelly-Ann Fraser will also be skipping it.
In yet another blow to the organisers, the Jamaican sprinter, who is the fourth fastest woman in the history, said she wanted to concentrate on next year’s World Championship.
“It is a long season and trying to peak for the Commonwealth and then coming home in December to start training for a World Championships (next year) is too much of an ask, especially for someone like me who is also a student.
“I will be in school. I don’t think I am going,” Fraser was quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
Fraser announced her decision at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon, where she came second in the 100m behind another Jamaican, Veronica Campbell-Brown.
However, the OC remained optimistic about her participation. “I don’t want to comment on the issue. The last date for submitting names of the athletes is September 3. As yet we have received about 10,000 entries. We will be able to say something only after the cut-off date,” OC spokesperson Lalit Bhanot said.
