Ashwin Sundar and Saran Vikram shared the honours on the opening day of the fourth round of the JK Tyre national racing championship here at the Irungattukottai track on Saturday.

While Ashwin led from pole to flag to emerge on top in the Race 1 of the Formula 4 class, Saran came out with a superb drive in the second race on a reverse grid.

Saran, who started third stormed into lead at the very first corner and there was no looking back for the Chennai youngster in the 10-lap race. Ashwin, who had a gearbox issue, couldn’t challenge Saran. Ashwin’s experienced teammate Sarosh Hataria drove an impressive race to finish third after starting sixth.

Pune veteran Ameya Walavalkar continued his domination in the Volkswagen Polo R Cup by clinching his third successive pole position. Ameya became the first Polo driver to break the two minute barrier on 3.7km Irungattukottai track when he set the fastest time of 1:59.979 on his very first flying lap.

Ameya will be joined on the front row by Goa’s Avdumber Hede, who finished 1.009 seconds behind him. Rahil Noorani and Munjal Savla will start on the second row, as they finished 1.072 seconds and 1.685 seconds respectively behind the leader.

Ameya was ecstatic having set the fastest time in Polo Cup history. “Winning my third pole in a row was a great start to the weekend and the record time was icing on the cake. Now, I want to make the most of it,” he added.
