Formula One: Bahrain set to miss out again
Continued sectarian violence means officials can no longer be confident of hosting the Bahrain Grand Prix.
They have already been working to identify an alternative.
According to the Daily Express, last week, a delegation from the European Tour went on a fact-finding mission to South Africa to look at three alternative potential venues in the Western Cape area with representatives from sponsors Volvo.
Unsurprisingly, a course designed by Ernie Els is favourite to host the two million pound event, with Oubaai – near the popular tourist resort of Knysna – catching the eye of the powers that be.
It will launch the ‘Race to Dubai’ – although there has been speculation that when the current deal expires in December, it would become known as the ‘Race to Abu Dhabi’, with the finale being switched to Dubai’s richer neighbours.
However, Tour sources revealed they have recently received a firm offer to extend the present contract for another three years.
