Ten weeks after finishing their inaugural Le Mans 24 Hours race in an impressive sixth overall, Chennai racer Karun Chandhok’s JRM Racing team are gearing up for their next challenge this weekend.

The fourth round of the FIA World Endurance Championship, the six-hours of Silverstone, will begin on Friday with a practice session.

JRM Racing are currently second in the LMP1, premier category, standings with 24 points behind the leaders, Rebellion Racing.

It will be Karun’s first race in nearly two months after his sixth place in the legendary Le Mans 24hr race. Silverstone is not only home to the team JRM Racing, but is also Karun’s second home as he has done countless miles around the Northamptonshire circuit. He lives in the nearby town Brackley.

“I’m excited about this weekend. We had a good test in Aragon last week, made some good progress that we can put into practice at Silverstone.

It’s our home race — as a team and all three drivers are based very close to the track — so we want to do well, and I think we have a good chance of succeeding,” Karun said.

“I have always enjoyed driving around the Silverstone circuit. We know that Audi and Toyota are in front but the competition around us is hard, so our goal is to be the best of the privateers.

“It’s not easy but the progress we’ve made since Le Mans gives us a lot of encouragement,” said the Indian, who switched from Formula 1 to endurance sportscar racing earlier this year.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
