Hyderabad, Jan. 29: Come Sunday, all roads will lead to the Hyderabad race course in Malakpet, the venue for the Derby. Of the nine events slated for the day, the one everyone will look out for — The Vijay Textiles Golconda Derby, is slated to bring a lot of excitement and racing aficionados are eagerly awaiting the premier event.

Over the years we have seen surprising results at The Vijay Textiles Golconda Derby with some super Fillies winning and solid colts biting the dust on the placid course which calls for stamina and speed.

Seven local contenders and five outstation horses will line up at the starting line. Among them Vijay Damini, Ice Mountain, Vijay Monarch and Camacho are the ones to look out for.

Vijay Damini (Elusive City-Kabubina) gets top billing for the event. She is in great shape and champion jockey P.S. Chouhan could easily ride her to a win. Trainer Deshmukh has painstakingly trained the filly for the blue riband event.

Vijay Damini will face stiff competition from K. Satheesh-trained Ice Mountain. Owned by Dr M.A.M. Ramaswamy (Juniper-Adams Delight) the horse that has a hat-trick of wins under its proverbial belt (including in the monsoon) won’t give an inch and A. Imran Khan, who has a penchant for riding winners at the highest levels, can always be counted upon to spring surprises. Vijay Monarch (Diffident-Post Impressionist), whose last run is best ignored, also has the right credentials to throw up a surprise. Camacho showed a terrific burst of speed at Mumbai, and this P. Shroff-trained colt may well pull off a victory.
