July 30: A meaningless day of Test cricket, that frankly, the players could have done without. India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was not averse to the idea of the final day’s play being scrapped when there is no result in sight.

“We would love to get an extra day of rest. The ICC might decide in future on this. After we have had one innings each, and nothing happening in terms of a result, may be they will call it off and we can go back to some nice food and drinks and also have some time off,” said Dhoni after the final day’s play on Friday.

There was nothing in the game as a contest. Runs and wickets became a mere formality. “Probably by tea yesterday when they went past our score the match was over for all practical purposes. Maybe we should have batted for more time stretched our score to 750 and ended up bowling more on the final day,” exclaimed Kumar Sangakkara.

For the sparse gathering on Friday, the mundane nature of the game with both camps going through the motions was a turnoff.

Even for the keen followers of Test cricket, the last day was too much to take. The wicket was the culprit. No point in blaming the bowlers for their average performance. “On this type of a wicket, 99.9 per cent of the time you will not get a result,” said Dhoni.
