ICC not bound to take action against Speed

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is unlikely to achieve anything by writing to the ICC about the disparaging remarks made by former ICC CEO, Mr Malcolm Speed, against Pakistan cricket and its Chairman, Mr Ijaz Butt.

The PCB shot a letter to ICC after Speed called Butt a 'buffoon' in an interview to an Australian newspaper and described the cricket boards of Pakistan and Bangladesh as politicised bodies.

Sources within the ICC told the PTI that since Mr Speed was now no longer associated with the ICC he did not come under its code of conduct.

"The letter sent by the PCB is going to serve no purpose because the ICC can't legally or technically take any action against Speed for his statement," one source said.

Mr Speed’s remarks came after Pakistan and Bangladesh joined India, Sri Lanka and South Africa in rejecting the nomination of former Australian Prime Minister, Mr John Howard, for the post of ICC vice-president.

Mr Butt has said he would not comment on Mr Speed's remarks as the board had already sent a letter to the ICC asking it to take note of the statement by Speed.

But the sources said that the ICC was not in any position to do anything.

"Speed is no longer with the ICC and does not even hold any position in cricket Australia. What he said was in his personal capacity and the ICC can't do anything about it," one source stated.

Sources said PCB was mulling to send a letter to Cricket Australia also over Speed's remarks.
