Mahela is new deputy
Colombo: With Muttiah Muralitharan quitting the Test scene, former skipper Mahela Jayawardene has been named vice-captain of the Lankan squad. “Mahela has a good cricketing brain and we want that to be used in the decision making process in the middle,” said Aravinda de Silva.
According to the selection committee Jayawardene will be of immense value to the team. Jayawardene who led the team to the final in the 2007 World Cup last led Sri Lanka in Pakistan, 2009, when the series was abandoned after terrorists attacked the team bus in Lahore. Jayawardene is Sri Lanka’s most capped player with 111 Tests after Muralitharan.
