Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna kept India alive in their Davis Cup World Group play-off against Japan with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) victory in the doubles against Tatsuma Ito and Yuichi Sugita here on Saturday.

India had lost both its singles matches on the opening day Friday and needed to win the doubles to stay afloat in the tie. India trail 1-2 in the tie.

The reverse singles will be played Sunday.
