‘IBL great thing to happen’
Young shutter K. Srikanth made his mark with a title win at the Thailand Grand Prix Gold this June. And the inaugural Indian Badminton League, where he played a key role for runners-up Awadhe Warriors, only added to his confidence.
Having give many top shuttlers, including compatriot Parupalli Kashyap, a run for the money during the event, the world no. 38 Srikanth shocked his Thai rival Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk, ranked 19 places above him in the world, with a 21-12, 21-20 victory in the final against Hyderabad Hotshots on Saturday.
“I performed well throughout the tournament, so I just wanted my team to get a good start and managed it,” he said.
“The Thailand GP Gold win gave me a lot of confidence. It improved my mental strength and I gained a lot from that.”
Despite finishing runners-up at the IBL, Awadhe Warriors’ Srikanth said he will go home a richer player after getting valuable lessons of the game from seasoned international stars.
“The IBL is a great thing to happen. Badminton has been on the rise. You learn a lot when you have senior players in your team.
“In our team we had (Mathias) Boe and (Markis) Kido, so there was a lot to learn from them. The way to start and end, the way to behave yourself on court, mental strength,” the 20-year-old said.
