Pinki off to London
Pinki Sonkar, the Indian girl chosen to toss the coin at this year’s men’s singles final at Wimbledon on July 7, left for the prestigious event after a special send-off dinner at the British high commissioner’s residence in the capital on Tuesday.
Pinki, who underwent a cleft surgery in 2007, courtesy the Smile Train and since then has been living a life free of shame and isolation. The event has also been captured in an Oscar winning documentary.
“I cannot think of a better place than Wimbledon’s famous Centre Court for Pinki to show to the world how Smile Train has helped to transform her life. Pinki is an ambassador for the hundreds of thousands of other children supported by this wonderful organisation. She will receive the warmest of welcomes everywhere she goes in the UK. She is an inspiration to us all,” British high commissioner to India James Bevan said.
