Sacked coach Miles Maclagan to become No.1: Murray

London, Jul 29: World No.4 Andy Murray has claimed that he had to sack coach Miles Maclagan if he was to become number one in tennis.

Murray sacked his coach Maclagan after a disagreement over the role of coaching consultant Alex Corretja, who was originally brought in to advise Murray on how to improve his clay-court game.

Murray said: “It was obviously a hard decision and wasn’t the nicest thing to have to take. But it wasn’t that tough to make up my mind because we were quite far apart in what we thought.”

“It wasn’t necessarily something that Miles wasn’t bringing as a coach. I don’t think I need to make huge changes in my game. I just need to become a better player all around,” The Sun quoted him, as saying.

Murray admitted that problems emerged in Miami this month when he met with his part-time adviser Corretja and Maclagan to discuss the best way forward.

He said: “Between the three of us, there were different ways of seeing things - what I felt was beneficial to me and what Miles and Alex felt was beneficial to me.

“I need to be comfortable in the setup that I have - have a 100 per cent confidence that everyone that’s working with me believes it’s the right thing to do.”

Murray added: “I want to become better, try and get to number one, try and win Grand Slams. I’ve had good results against (Roger) Federer. I’ve beaten (Rafa) Nadal a couple of times in Slams. I’ve been to the latter stages of quite a few Slams.”

Former Aussie tennis ace Darren Cahill is tipped to succeed Maclagan.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
