Yaroslava Shvedova completed the first Golden Set in Grand Slam history as the Kazakh wildcard won all 24 points and conceded none in a 6-0 first set whitewash against Sara Errani at Wimbledon on Saturday.

Shvedova, the world number 65, hit 14 winners and took just 15 minutes to demolish Italian 10th seed Errani, the French Open runner-up, in an incredible first set on Court Three.

The 24-year-old, the Wimbledon doubles champion in 2010 and twice a French Open quarter-finalist, couldn't dominate quite so emphatically in the second set.

But she still landed the decisive break to secure a 6-0, 6-4 victory in 57 minutes to reach the last 16.

"Today I laid a golden egg," Shvedova tweeted.

Shvedova will face four-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams for a place in the quarter-finals.

Williams, who claimed her own Wimbledon record on Saturday by firing 23 aces in her win over Zheng Jie, said she had never heard of a Golden Set.

"I never knew that existed. I was like, What does that mean? I immediately thought, She won all four in a row and the Olympics? I thought that wasn't possible. That's the only golden thing I know of," said the American.

"Hopefully I'll be able to win a point in the set. That will be my first goal, and then I'll go from there."

The only previous player to record a Golden Set was American Bill Scanlon, who won all 24 points in the second set of his 6-2, 6-0 first round defeat of Marcos Hocevar of Brazil at Delray Beach in 1983.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.
