Tennis crisis: Leander Paes pulls out of Olympics
It turned out that the selection crisis for Olympics is far from over, even after the All India Tennis Association (Aita) claimed to have worked out a compromise formula.
According to reports, Leander Paes has has pulled out of London Olympics after the association decided to team him up with lower ranked Vishnu Vardhan for the men’s doubles competition.
Earlier on the day, Aita has decided to send two men's doubles teams for the event, pairing Leander Paes with a lower-ranked Vishnu Vardhan.
allowed Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna to team up for the London event after both of them adamantly refused to partner the 39-year-old veteran. AITA itself termed the decision as ‘unfair’ on world number 7 Paes.
"This decision is unfair to India No. 1 (Paes). Aita holds Leander in very high esteem. We are confident that Leander won't disappoint us as he has done yeoman's service to the game," Aita President had said.
Vishnu Vardhan was picked by Aita as he has won back-to-back ITF Futures titles recently. He was a member of the bronze medalist Indian men's team for 2010 Asian games in Guangzhou, China. He was paired-up with and Sania Mirza for mixed doubles and won silver medal then.
Paes, on Wednesday, had rejected the two-team formula suggested by the Aita in which he was to be paired with a youngster such as Yuki Bhambri or Vishnu Vardhan.
