Venus Williams lost in her first match in more than two months, falling 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 to Kirsten Flipkens at the Rogers Cup on Tuesday.
It was Williams’ first tour match since she lost in the first round of the French Open on May 26. The 33-year-old missed Wimbledon, after 16 consecutive appearances, because of a lower back injury.
Maria Kirilenko and Ana Ivanovic won in straight sets to advance to the second round. Kirilenko cruised past qualifier Petra Martic 6-2, 6-1, and Ivanovic defeated Su-Wei Hsieh 6-1, 6-2.
In other matches, American qualifier Lauren Davis edged Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 7-5, 7-5; Dominika Cibulkova stopped Angelique Kerber 6-7 (0), 6-2, 7-5; and Canada’s Eugenie Bouchard defeated Alisa Kleybanova 6-3, 6-1.

Djokovic eases INto third round

Novak Djokovic returned to competition after a post-Wimbledon pause on Tuesday and coasted into the third round at the ATP Montreal Masters.
The Serb world no.1 easily defeated Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-1, then proceeded to dance with a tennis ball mascot with choreography he said and friends worked out last month on holiday in Croatia.

Mirza, zheng advance to pre-quarters
Toronto, Aug. 7: Sania Mirza and her new partner Jie Zheng came from behind to beat Natalie Grandin and Darija Jurak and advance to the second round of the WTA Rogers Cup on Wednesday.
The fifth-seeded Indo-Chinese pair registered a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-2 win over the South African-Croatian team in the opening round.
There was little to separate the two teams but Sania and Jie outplayed their opponents in the super tie-breaker to run away with the win.
They will now fight it out with Goergia’s Oksana Kalashnikova and Alicja Rosolska of Poland for a place in the quarter-finals. — PTI
