Vinod, Spurti impress in Jordan

Spurti Shivalingaiah and Vinod Gowda, products of Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association’s HPTC programme, impressed at the ITF Junior Circuit in Amman, Jordon. Spurti, a 15-year-old Bengaluru girl, made the singles semifinals and was also a finalist in the doubles event, partnering Pakistan’s Ushna Suhail. On the other hand, Vinod lifted the doubles title, partnering his Junior Davis Cup team-mate Arjun Khade.

Spurti, seeded eighth in singles, upset her doubles partner and fourth seed Ushna in the quarterfinals 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8). But the Indian’s run came to an end, when she went down to 17-year-old Mai El Kamash 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Vinod and Arjun Khade, the top seeds in the tournament had little problem in beating Kuwait pair Abdal and Bouhamad 6-3, 6-3 to take home the title.
