Yadlapalli Pranjala's win the only succour as India loses to Canad in Junior World tennis
On a day India tasted defeate more often than not, Hyderabad’s Yadlapalli Pranjala provided the only succour, registering a singles victory during a 1-2 loss to Canada in Group ‘C’ of the girls' under-14 age category at the World Junior Tennis Finals in Protejov, Czech Republic, on Tuesday.
Pranjala defeated Katherine Sebov 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Canada had made a bright start when Vanessa Wong put Mihika Sanjoy Yadav to the sword, winning their singles rubber 6-2, 6-4.
Pranjala then swung into action to pull things back. However, India’s relief proved short-lived as Pranjala and Mihika sunk to a 3-6, 2-6 loss to the pair of Vanessa and Charlotte Robillard-Millette.
For a while, it seemed as though Canada would wrap up the tie 2-0 when Pranjala lost the first set 3-6.
However, she dug deep into her arsenal to produce a turnaround in the second set, taking her opponent by surprise to win it 6-2.
She then capitalised on the momentum and held off a fightback from Sebov to win the decider 7-5 and level things for her team. India next face Spain, who blanked Peru 3-0.
