Right zone for Yoga

Yoga possesses the unique ability to calm the physiological and psychological body. It is being practised all across the globe to address increasing pressures of everyday lives — it is helping people to find mental peace and physical relaxation while making them feel good about themselves. It is believed that yogic exercises cater to the needs of each individual according to his or her specific needs and physical condition.

However, not all the people practising yoga are able to reap equal benefits. While some people could be gaining a lot by minimal practice of yoga, some may not be able to get enough benefits even after practicing it for long hours on daily basis. One of the major reasons for this is the direction of the room where it is being performed.
If Vastu Shastra is to be believed, the benefits of yoga can only come through if it is performed at the right place — the place where there is no flow of negative energy, where the mind can be at peace and the body is in a relaxed state. The place of yoga has to ensure that it meets the purpose of the practice — body and mind rise to the level of the illuminated self. Hence, yoga cannot be practiced in just any room located in just any direction of the house.
As per Vastu Shastra, the house can be divided into sixteen zones. Each of these zones has a purpose and only a predefined activity can be performed in these zones. For instance, there is a specific zone — South of South West — marked as a dumping zone and is ideal for throwing away the waste.
Likewise, South has been identified as the zone of relaxation and is recommended for yoga and meditation. This is a zone wherein the mind and the body can attain a state of complete relaxation and can allow an individual to wholly concentrate on each yoga asana.
Interestingly, even Astrology has found that the Sun is at its apex in the South direction, ensuring that the South is illuminated the most, making it ideal for yoga.
Another recommended zone for yoga — primarily the physical exercises — is the South of South East. This direction supposedly governs power, energy, strength and confidence. It is believed that the strength in the human body is influenced by the energy that is emanated by this zone. Some mind-related yoga exercises can be performed in this zone.
Many natural healing or nature care centres in Kerala have understood the therapeutic significance of this zone and have created their healing centres in this zone.
If you have been unrolling the mat in just any room of the house, stop doing it immediately and examine what activities are being done in the above-mentioned zones. And if you find that the South is quite clear, permanently place your yoga mat there. Soon, you will begin to feel the positive effects of yoga on everyday basis. The right practice in right zone will stimulate and change emotional attitudes. It will convert apprehensiveness into courage, indecisiveness into positive decision-making skills, and emotional instability into mental equilibrium.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
