Jinxed marriages galore in soaps

A still from Maryada

A still from Maryada

Jaise jaise IPL paas aa raha hai, vaise-vaise mere ko ajeeb-ajeeb si marital vibes feel ho rahi hain. Hai, soch-soch ke tension ho rahi hai that mera TV band hone walla hai.
Isi depression mein I thought, chalo, let’s at least enjoy the marital bliss of our top TV couples. But hai, yahan bhi syappa hi syappa. Sab married ladies aur gents ke life ki waat lagi hui hai.
Uttaran (Colors) main churail Tapasya’s natak is in progress. And this time she is joined not only by her Nani but also by Veer’s mother who wears a wig that looks like a crow died and was laid to rest on her head. This wig-walli lady doesn’t let go of any opportunity to insult and humiliate Ichcha. She’s always talking about we the Thakurs and you the naukars. And it’s because of wig-lady and Tapasya’s bad aura that after celebrating Ammu’s happy birthday, as the lovey-dovey couple was returning home, that Veer hit one girl Saachi with his big car.
As she lay bleeding and behosh on the road, my mind drifted to the next 11 months — there will be much kalesh about the accident and all blame will be on Ichcha. Veer aur Ichcha main there will be darar, Ichcha will be out of the Bundela bungalow, and the lovers will again tarpo for each other. Churail Tapasya will again throw her jaal, but her fake pregnancy will be exposed and everyone will realise that she is bad and Ichcha is good. Tapasya will again be slapped and thrown out and Ichcha will be brought back...
Hai, this Veer-Tapasya marriage toh is jinxed, so for some canoodling I leapt to the love birds on Pavitra Rishta (Zee). Manav and Archana are finally together and may canoodle if Archana’s sister would just stop bringing over her rona-dhona to their house. Ek toh that Vaishali’s roly-poly cretin husband Dharmesh slept with another lady and even has a child from her, while second sister Varsha doesn’t know that she can never become a maa. There was so much heartburn and wringing of pallu ends that I moved to Maryada (Star Plus) where Priya the Wronged One wed Aditya the Besotted One.
Shaadi-vaadi toh went all well, with both oblivious of the fact that Aditya’s father was Priya’s molester in the train. And while the newly-weds may have one or two nice suhaag raats, this marriage is also jinxed, just like the other marriages in Jhakkar parivar — one husband is trying to sell his wife for a night to a very repulsive man, another is refusing to touch his wife. Hai, kahin IPL ka prakop, toh kahin Shani ka.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
