Telcos fail to offer mobile number swap
The implementation of the mobile number portability (MNP) has once again been postponed. The telecom ministry has now set October 31, as the new deadline for the implementation of the MNP.
MNP allows a subscriber to change the telecom operator while retaining the old mobile number.
Earlier the government wanted to implement the MNP by June 2009. But since then it has been delayed numerous times. The latest deadline was June 30.
“Today was the last day of the timeline given for MNP implementation. The government has taken a decision (to extend the deadline) after reviewing the readiness of various service providers and keeping in view the complexity and enormity of the testing involved before MNP is implemented,” said a statement from the DoT.
“A huge amount of work is involved in the implementation of the MNP. We have to carry out tests for pre-paid and post-paid separately,” said Mr S.C. Khanna, secretary-general of telecom body AUSPI.
