Venues to get security cordon today

The Delhi police will take over all the Commonwealth Games venues on Tuesday. The Delhi police, which is the nodal agency for Games security, will conduct various drills, including anti-sabotage checks once it takes over possession of the venues, confirmed Delhi police officers. Apart from around 80,000 Delhi police personnel, over 17,500 paramilitary personnel, 3,000 commandos and 100 anti-sabotage check teams will be deployed across the city. The Army has been asked to be alert.

Sensex up 338 points, highest in 31 months

SC refuses to hand over Ishrat case to CBI

Noting that all cases cannot be probed by the agency, the Supreme Court on Monday refused to hand over to the CBI the investigation into the alleged fake encounter killing of 19-year-old Mumbai college girl Ishrat Jahan, an alleged operative of terror group Lashkar-e-Tayyaba, by the Gujarat police six years ago.

Six-phase Bihar polls October 21 to Nov. 20

The Election Commission on Monday announced a six-phase poll schedule for the Bihar Assembly. The entire exercise is spread out over a period of one month beginning October 21 and ending November 20. Counting would be taken up on November 24. The bypoll for Banka Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant due to the death of Digvijay Singh, will be held on November 1 along with elections for 42 Assembly constituencies in the fourth phase.

Six arrested with fake currency

Six persons allegedly involved in smuggling of fake Indian currency and contraband from Pakistan, have been arrested by the special cell of Delhi police. The police has recovered `1.95 lakhs’ worth fake currency in the denomination of `500 notes, apart from one kg smack and 2 kg charas from the accused. Six mobile phones have also been recovered. One of the accused had been convicted in a drug smuggling case and sentenced to 14 years’ jail.
