Six-phase Bihar polls October 21 to Nov. 20
The Election Commission on Monday announced a six-phase poll schedule for the Bihar Assembly. The entire exercise is spread out over a period of one month beginning October 21 and ending November 20. Counting would be taken up on November 24. The bypoll for Banka Lok Sabha seat, which fell vacant due to the death of Digvijay Singh, will be held on November 1 along with elections for 42 Assembly constituencies in the fourth phase.
Chief Election Commi-ssioner S.Y. Quraishi, flanked by election commissioners V.S. Sampath and H.S. Brahma, announced the poll calendar for the 243-member Bihar Assembly. The first phase, on October 21, will witness polling in 47 seats. The second phase, (Oct. 24) will have polling for 45 seats. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth phases (Oct. 28, Nov. 1, Nov. 9 and Nov. 20) will witness contests in 48, 42, 35 and 26 seats respectively.
In all, a little more than 5.50 crore electors are expected to exercise their franchise. A total of 56,943 polling stations will be at work to ensure the next Assembly is in place before November 27.
This election is all set to witness a triangular conflict between the JD(U)-BJP bloc, the RJD-LJP alliance and the Congress, which has decided to go it alone this time. Being the first poll after the 2009 Lok Sabha election, the outcome could well turn out to be a harbinger of change.
