Each August I look forward to one particular phone call; the one that invites me to be part of the Bandra Zonals.

As a child I remember old movie posters announcing the ‘Silver Jubilee’ of a film. This was when a movie reached 25 weeks of playing in a cinema.

When Captain Kirk uttered those immortal words, he could well have been talking about performance venues in Mumbai. Maximum City has always had real estate problems. In spite of being India’s busiest theatre city, it doesn’t have an adequate number of performance spaces.

A Disappearing Number is an international show that visited Mumbai last week. Although it could easily have been the title for my own shows last weekend.

A few nights ago I found myself sitting in a packed theatre, eagerly awaiting the start of a brand new play called A Guy Thing; about two men stuck in a cabin during a torrential downpour.

The monsoon has hit Mumbai shores. But elsewhere in the world, summer is blooming. And with summer comes theatre festivals; particularly of the fringe kind.

My earliest exposure to “international theatre” was thanks to the British Council.

I hate working with kids. Not because I don’t like children (I actually am quite fond of the little critters), but every time I try to get them to do something formalised, it ends in disaster. For years, I have resisted working with children. But we are all servants to the larger theatre group. So when it was decided that Thespo would create a play for kids with kids, I had no choice but to dive in.
