Roy son bail plea rejected
The Barrackpore court on Monday rejected the bail plea of Trinamul Congress candidate from Bijpur Subhrangshu Roy and remanded him in jail custody for a day. The accused will be produced at the court on Tuesday again.
EC meets on Deb’s black money charge
The full bench of the EC on Monday discussed the media reports on CPI(M) central committee member Gautam Deb’s allegations over the use of “black money” worth `100 crores by the Trinamul Congress in the Assembly elections. A top EC official said from New Delhi that the Commission was examining the reports. “The EC is yet to take a decision on whether to order a probe into the allegations. However, the political parties can raise fund by issuing coupons,” the official informed.
Caller claims to be Buddha, probe ordered
A person, identifying himself as chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, called up a man and asked him to pass an order. This incident was brought to the notice of state chief electoral officer Sunil Gupta and city police commissioner R.K. Pachnanda by Mr Bhattacharjee’s election agent and former city mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya. Mr Bhattacharjee is contesting the Assembly elections from Jadavpur constituency.
Nearly 80% vote in 1st phase of Bengal polls
Over 80 per cent of the voters on Monday cast their votes in 54 constituencies in six districts in North Bengal in the first phase of the six-phased Assembly elections in West Bengal. More importantly, the elections were completely peaceful with no incident of violence, clash and rioting. No person was killed or injured and only 10 persons were taken into preventive custody.
