Suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt gets bail

Behind the bars for 17 days, suspended IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt, locked in a confrontation with chief minister Narendra Modi over the 2002 Gujarat riots, was on Monday released on bail by a sessions court which expressed “reasonable doubts” about the case in which he was arrested.

Rupee down by 22 paise against US dollar

The Indian rupee was down by 22 paise to Rs 49.16 per US dollar in early trade on Tuesday, wiping out gains registered in the past two sessions on fresh demand for the American currency from banks and importers in view of dollar firmness in overseas markets.

Sensex slips below 17,000

A benchmark index for Indian equities on Monday gave up its modest early gains and fell below the 17,000-mark in noon trade. The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the BSE opened at 17,176.05 points and was ruling at 16,973.47 points, down 109.22 points or 0.64 per cent from its previous close at 17,082.69 points.

Ghazal’s golden voice dies

Eminent ghazal singer Jagjit Singh passed away at around 8.10 am at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on Monday. He was admitted to the hospital on September 18 after suffering a brain haemorrhage. He was 70 and is survived by wife Chitra Singh. His funeral will take place on Tuesday at the Chandanwadi crematorium in Mumbai at around 3 pm.
