The early morning, 4.30 am, swoop by the 10-member team of the CBI headed by its joint director Lakshmi Narayan on the homes of former minister and director of the Obulapuram Mining Company, Gali Janardhan Reddy and the company’s managing director B.V. ‘It’s mining industry’s darkest day’
A pall of gloom descended on the over 100 mining fields and steel industry hubs in the district as the Supreme Court’s green bench ordered a blanket ban on mining over the 10,868 hectares of reserved forest land in the district till further orders. “This is the mining industry’s darkest day,” said Bellary-Sandur-Hospet Mine Owners Association secretary Hothur Mohammed Iqbal.
Steel industry may buckle under ban
The Supreme Court’s decision to impose a blanket ban on mining operations in the district could badly impact the state’s steel industry which produces about 14 million tonnes of steel a year.
